CONGREGATION OF THE MISSIONARY SISTERS OF THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTION OF THE MOTHER OF GOD

The Congregation of the Missionary Sisters of the Immaculate Conception of the Mother of God was officially established in Brazil on December 5, 1910, in the city of Santarém-Pará. His Excellency Amando Bahlmann and Elizabeth Tombrock (Mother Mary Immaculate of Jesus) were the founders. In 1910, His Excellency Amando Bahlmann, bishop of Santarém-Pará, wanting to develop missionary work in his Prelacy, especially the education of children and young people, obtained four religious sisters from the Conceptionist Sisters of the Convent of Ajuda in Rio de Janeiro to collaborate in the foundation of his Congregation.
In Germany, Elizabeth Tombrock, a young teacher who had been cured of tuberculosis in Lourdes, accepted His Excellency Amando's invitation to be part of this mission in the Amazon, where she could live as a nun of the Order of St. Clare of Assisi and teach children. Four Conceptionist nuns, His Excellency Amando, and the young Elizabeth went to Santarém and founded the Congregation of the Missionary Sisters of the Immaculate Conception of the Mother of God. From the beginning, many young German women were attracted by the missionary ideal of the founders. The religious community expanded throughout Brazil and also to other countries. Currently, the Congregation is present in Germany, the United States, China, Taiwan, the Philippines, Vietnam, Namibia, and Angola.
