MRS. DULCINHA AND SANTA DULCE OF THE POOR

"TWO BODIES AND ONE SOUL"

Dulce Maria de Souza Brito Lopes Pontes (Dona Dulcinha) was born on November 9, 1915, in Salvador, Bahia, the third daughter of Dulce Maria and Augusto Lopes Pontes. She was one year younger than Santa Dulce dos Pobres, her closest sister.

In 1954, she married a cousin from Rio de Janeiro who had the same name as her father, Augusto Lopes Pontes, and went to live in the city of Rio de Janeiro. She had an only daughter, Maria Rita Pontes, named after the baptismal name of Saint Dulce dos Pobres. She was widowed in 1976, the same year her father passed away. Dona Dulcinha was the safe haven of Saint Dulce dos Pobres, her right hand in helping those most in need and, by Divine Providence, gave her as a great gift the woman who would be her successor in the leadership of OSID. She lived the ideal of Love and Service until the day of her death, at the age of 91, on November 18, 2006. The harmony that existed between them,

“THE PLACE WHERE YOU ARE IS HOLY GROUND”
THREE SAINTS OF OUR TIME STOOD HERE

Saint Dulce dos Pobres lived in this place from 1948, the year the Santo Antônio Convent was built, until March 13, 1992, the date of her death. Saint Teresa of Calcutta also walked this path of love and faith, when in 1979 she came to Salvador to found a house for her congregation in the Alagados neighborhood, and Saint John Paul II, who blessed the Good Angel on his sickbed on October 20, 1991, when he was in Salvador on his second official trip to Brazil. It was the second meeting of Saint Dulce dos Pobres with Saint John Paul II.

Therefore, the Irmã Dulce Social Works are indeed a sacred place, as they welcomed three
saints of our time who had in common the love of their neighbor. And they continue to be the House of Love, a place where people are welcomed and loved. Therefore, the heart of Saint Dulce dos Pobres, who loved, served and welcomed so much, continues to beat through her Social Works.
