THE PRESENCE OF SAINT ANTHONY IN THE LIFE OF SAINT DULCE OF THE POOR

SAINT ANTHONY, THE TREASURER OF OSID

Once, at the request of Saint Dulce of the Poor, one of her advisors appointed an accountant to assist her with the financial matters of the work. When he arrived to carry out the task, the professional asked Saint Dulce to introduce him to the hospital's treasurer. Without hesitation, she led him to the Convent Chapel and, prostrating herself before the image of Saint Anthony, said: "Here is the treasurer of our hospital."

The accountant, not understanding the situation, saw the nun continue seriously, explaining that Saint Anthony was the one who helped the Work in the most difficult moments, never letting anything be lacking.

Convinced, the accountant asked the nun to show him the financial documents so he could help in the best way possible.

SAINT ANTHONY CLOTHES THE SAINT DULCE' S POOR

It was a bitterly cold night in Salvador. Dozens of people gathered in front of the Convent, crying out for help to the nun. “Sister, I’m cold!” one shouted. “Sister, for the love of God, give me a blanket,” another lamented. From the window of her room, she threw the blankets she could find.

Suddenly one of the sisters alerted her: “We have no more blankets.” “So,” said Saint Dulce, "let's take mine first, because they need it more than I do." Desperate, she went down to the chapel and begged Saint Anthony: "My protector, you who on winter nights went out to the villages of Italy to shelter the most destitute, always finding a way to protect them, turn your eyes to the poor of my land, who need it so much."

At that moment, she heard the sound of a car braking suddenly. Frightened, she ran out into the street in time to see the driver of the Willys driving away. That face seemed familiar to her. She was intrigued, but she had to immediately open the bundles of blankets left by the man to distribute to his poor. When she returned to thank Saint Anthony, she recognized that face as Willys’ driver. That night, the saint had the position of driver added to his resume.

SAINT ANTHONY FEEDS THE GOOD ANGEL ' S POOR

In the 1960s, the patients at the shelter were fed on a daily basis, since the social work was carried out exclusively on donations. One late afternoon, a certain nervousness was lingering in the hospital kitchen. "Sister Dulce, we don't have enough food for everyone tonight," said a nun. "Who am I going to turn to at this hour?" thought Saint Dulce, heading to the chapel to meet her great friend. Kneeling down, she asked Saint Anthony to help her.

Then she was called to answer the phone and heard a tearful voice saying: “oh, sister, my daughter was abandoned at the church door, and we don’t know what to do with the food from the party. That’s why I decided to send it to you. I hope you don’t mind.” “My daughter, may God shower you with blessings. You can’t imagine the good you are doing. And rest assured that Saint Anthony will help your daughter find another fiancé who will make her very happy.”

That night, before going to sleep, Saint Dulce returned to the chapel and asked her protector: "My little saint, don't forget the promise I made so that I could find a new marriage for the abandoned young bride. Please!"

DULCE AND ANTHONY, THE OBSTETRICIAN SAINTS

It was 1959, and as usual, every day, very early, Saint Dulce led the cleaning of the convent. Outside, people were gathered, waiting for help. Suddenly, a commotion and screams were heard coming from the street. “The woman is in labor!” “Oh, someone help me!” “Oh, my God!”

Still holding the mop in her hands, Saint Dulce arrived in time to see the woman moaning in pain and asking for help. “Help me, Sister Dulce.” “But we don’t have a maternity ward here,” she replied. “Call an ambulance,” someone shouted. “We won’t have time,” the Sister replied, leading the young woman to the only sheltered place at that moment, under a small pine tree in the convent garden.

Realizing that the birth was imminent, she said, "My Saint Anthony, stay by my side." After a few minutes, the baby's cry and the applause of the people watching the scene could be heard. With the newborn in her arms, Saint Dulce asked the mother, "What will be his name?" "Name him, Sister!-said the woman." She looked up, smiled, closed her eyes, and said, "His name is Anthony."
